Cleaning House; Why Read Stories

Well, paperwork to be exact. I'm trying to sift through and decide what may still be needed in the years to come and what I can trash/recycle (my favourite part). In doing so I’ve found some stories, poems and quotes that I’ll preserve online...

Why Read Stories

If we grow up
hearing stories about the heroic youngest son,
the steadfast princess,
the wicked king,
the kindly grandmother,
we learn a little about
life’s cast of characters –
about being child
and being parent.

If we read the stories
of Dickens’ Scrooge,
O’Henry’s Magi,
a Walter Mitty,
or Jack London’s fire,
we see some of the drama in the ways of the world.

Stories give us a sense
of where we are
in the whole human race.

If we tell children good stories
or give them one to read,
we give them\the language for living
in any society,
and we give them
the imagination to understand
the complex human heart

No topic is too small
for books:
there should be stories of humour,
and books about sports
and how to spell,
there should be
biographies and fairy tales –
for they all help to create great wells of resourcefulness
in each of us
as we add our stories
to life’s cast of characters.
